Reports which spreads excitement among the people about what will next! Or news which shivers down with sentiments is one of the biggest expectations of any newspaper owner. Press Reporters or Press Photographers are playing the part in such dreams as they begin their journey right from morning and till late night they get busy in framing the news and placing it correctly.
After the news is published the duo prepares for the next days work for the same spacing and search. Its very often to see that the newsmen have little time to spare even for their family or relatives, added to that the salaries of the newsmen working in the urban areas is low less which is just enough to feed on their family. Plus, their burden for being named as the fourth pillar of the democracy and constitution somewhat makes them feel proud of themselves and sometimes this proud ness diverts them from doing noble works.
But in this busy life and the hard day’s work of the pressmen if any particular reporter finds himself worrying about for the sorrows of others like taking care of a child suffering from critical disease and for that particular child the press reporter/photographer appeals from entire country to help the child and finally get the child cured is something which makes us to bow him/her. The story is related with a carpenter who is actually a person who is earning just Rs 90 per day which is just sufficient for him to feed his family. But the when he sees his child suffering from dreaded disease then surely the poor man is left with no option. How the person earning Rs 90 can get his son can operated spending Rs 2 lakhs. But this has come true, facing all odds and difficulties and the biggest of that is the Bombay Blood Group which is the rarest group. There are nearly 120 crore of people in the country, counted as population, among these many just a handful precisely 57 of them have been identified for having the rare blood group.
The story is of Arvind and his savior Abdul Aslam. Living in slums of Bilaspur Chhattisgarh Arvind is a six year old son of Ashwani Kumar Baghel. Arvind’s case came into knowledge of Aslam who is actually a reporter cum Press Photographer in a Hindi Daily. He was visiting Apollo for news collection when he came to know of such a child who is admitted in the hospital and is having a hole in his heart. The doctors had discharged him from the hospital the reason was the child was having the rare blood group that is Bombay Blood. The child got the fund from the State Government under the Sanjeevini Scheme which was sent back by the Apollo Hospitals after deducting two days expenses. Aslam felt it as a news matter and finally tried to highlight the things in the public. But even after getting the matter published he couldn’t get off from the case. Arvind, innocent he was, is always seen cheerful and playful, but within a short time he used to get bad breathing. The parents of this suffering child had lost all hopes of getting their child ever playful and cheerful in the days to come. But the savior of Arvind, Aslam was having different mind and approach. He with his own efforts got the news published in all daily newspapers and also in the electronic channels. Apollo Hospitals also started the efforts with activeness and informed Aslam that if they can get four units of blood then the operation could be done. Now was the turn for Aslam who took the arrangement of blood as a mission and took the help of internet. He searched for long hours in internet to get some donors of this blood group, but failed to trace any. Even the hospital management had informed that they searched in entire country but they didn’t have any blood from there. Aslam mailed the world’s biggest Blood Bank situated in New York but the reply was that he should search the blood in India itself rather than searching outside. In the meanwhile Aslam came around a person living in Korba who was having the blood group same as Arvind. Though the youth, named Bagirath Yadav, was physically disabled he still agreed to donate the blood for Arvind. Now the search was for three more units of blood. Since Aslam is connected with the media he found the most convenient to get the news published in all the leading news papers and got the response from all the Hindi and English Dailies not only from State but also from throughout the country. Even the leading electronic channels like Zee News, Sahara Samay, ETV, BBC Hindi.com India Today, and others picked up the news in priority. IBN 7 was most impressive when they caught up with a 30 minute long briefing. Live Telecast on Star News on 3may2007. The efforts started bearing fruits and Aslam and Ashwini were contacted by many people from throughout the country.
When Apollo refused for the operation,
Bhagirath gave one unit of blood, later on a person from Rourkela also gave one unit and one unit of blood was brought by a medical representative living in Dombavili Bombay. Dr Sanjay Jain accepted for the operation with 3 units of blood but just a day before the schedule operation he refused for the operation stating reasons that there are no facilities over here and thus Arvind should be carried to Apollo Hospitals Chennai. Arvind’s father had lost the final hope, but it can’t be left in the mid way, when it was almost done. But the last nail was hammered down by the Chennai Hospitals who refused for the operation with just 3 units asking to arrange 6 units and that the blood kept in Bilaspur is of no use and fresh blood is to be brought for the operation. However, the efforts were on and the contacts were still active. Finally Satish Singh Thakur from Raigarh, Amitabh Kumar Tiwari, and Jamshedpur agreed to donate their blood and to reach the place where the operation was scheduled. BS Sridhar, working as Chief Manager in Telecom Company Bangalore, also expressed his willingness to donate blood. During this time one of the friend of Aslam informed him about Narayan Hrdayala Hospital where the facilities are maximum and the expenses are too less. The chairperson of the hospitals Dr Devi Shetty was contacted and he gave his nod for helping the child. It should be remembered that Narayan Hospital is the one where the famous Girl Child from Pakistan (Noor) was operated in her heart and was the headline of every newspaper. During this time efforts of Aslam and Ashwini got another success when the State Government sanctioned the funds again under Sanjeevini for Narayan Hospitals, which was not in the listed hospitals for the government. 15 days before the operation Arvind, his Parents reached Narayan Heart Hospital and later on Aslam along with the blood donors reached the destination.
It was on Oct 24 when Dr C Reddy, Dr Sandeep and four other doctors operated Arvind for 4 hours and gave him a new life. Now Arvind is fully cured and celebrated his 7th birthday recently, which actually his parents were not expecting to happen with all such hardships. Shivkumari Kurre teaching in Baloda College, AK Pauranik of Novino Batteries, Rajesh Batwe, Sunil Mittal, Pramod Agrawal, Nikhil Uphadhya, Afzal Hussain, Meena Lusani (Kuwait) contributed for Arvind and his family. SECL also gave its contributions for the operations. Aslam was also honored by Mungeli Press Club for the key and vital role.
Seeing the case of Arvind and his fight back Aslam thought off for creating (Bombay Blood Helpline) and is trying to connect more and more with this helpline. Anyone can join this helpline and especially those who are of Bombay Blood Group. Aslam can be contacted either on email: bombayblood.bsp@rediffmail.com, aslamimage@rediffmail.com, or in mobile: 91-9926803514/91-9425543845
